The following lesson plans are intended for a Spanish class grades 6 through 8. When writing a lesson plan, teachers need to make sure that they have an explicit and well written objective, in order to get the outcome intended for the lesson.
“Las direcciones” (Directions) Lesson Plan #1
Objective
After learning the Spanish vocabulary used to give directions, students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the new vocabulary by forming groups of four to create a map of a town and explaining to each other how to get to specific places in town with 100% accuracy.
Standards Language Other than English #1: Communication skills. The students will be able to use a language other than English for communication.
-Indicator: This will be evident when the students present their town and explain how to get to the different places using the target language.
Arts Standard #1: Creating arts. The students will actively engage in the process that constitutes the creation of arts.
-Indicator: This will be evident when the students create and draw the town to be presented.
Motivation
The students will be asked for directions to get to different places or offices within the school building.
Materials
Crayons, magazines, construction paper, scissors, glue, dictionary, and cardboards.
Teaching strategies
Direct instruction: The teacher will explain the vocabulary used to give directions in Spanish. The teacher will give the clear directions by using gestures, pointing to a map, and repeating the key information.
Discussion: The teacher will elicit directions from students on how to get to the different places or offices within the school building.
Cooperative learning: Students will work in groups to create their town and present it to the class.
Assessment
Students will be able to create a town to be presented to the class explaining how to get to different places using the proper vocabulary with 100% accuracy.
Adaptability
- The students with sight impairments will be given a worksheet with enlarged prints.
- The students with psychomotor skills disabilities will get assistance from other students in the group when creating the map of a town.
Tier 1: Students will create a map of a town to be presented to the class explaining how to get to different places using the vocabulary taught in class with 100% accuracy. In addition, tier 1 students will be given a word box with the vocabulary that they can use for the project.
Tier 2: Students will create a map of a town to be presented to the class explaining how to get to different places using the vocabulary taught in class with 100% accuracy.
Tier 3: Students will create a map of a town to be presented to the class explaining how to get to different places using the vocabulary taught in class with 100% accuracy. In addition, tier 3 students will have to mention the means of transportation they can use to get to the different places of their town.
Independent Practice
The students will be given a worksheet to be filled out using the vocabulary taught in class to give directions. The teacher will be checking on them for understanding and to give feedback and assessment.
Direct Teacher Intervention
The students and the teacher will play a game together to practice the vocabulary by walking in the classroom and following directions. For example: walk straight, stop and turn right, etc.
Academic enrichment In groups of four, the students will present the town they created to the class explaining how o get to different places in their town using the accurate vocabulary.
"La Casa" (The house) Lesson Plan #2
Instructional Objective
After learning the new vocabulary of the different rooms of a house and the names of the furniture, students will write a descriptive paragraph of the picture of a room of a house with 100% accuracy.
Key Concept: Students will demonstrate their ability to write in Spanish using the new vocabulary.
Standards Indicators

Mathematics, Science and Technology Standard #5: Students will apply technological knowledge and skills to design, construct, use, and evaluate products and systems to satisfy human and environmental needs.
-Indicator: This will be evident when the students read a set of descriptions and match them to the pictures on the smart board.
Motivation
Students will be introduced to the lesson by asking them if they live in a house or an apartment, then the teacher will play a youtube video which describes the rooms of a house.
Materials
Smart board, videos, pictures of rooms with furniture, magazines, paper, and worksheets.
Teaching Strategies
Discussion: The teacher will start the lesson with questions such as Do you live in a house or in an apartment? Students will discuss the differences between these two types of living spaces.
Direct instruction: The teacher will explain the vocabulary of the rooms of a house and the furniture.
Cooperative learning: Students will work in groups of two to write the descriptive paragraph.
True-False sorts: After the teacher explains the different parts of the house, students will be asked assorted statements which they will have to identify as true or false.
Adaptations
- Students with sight impairments will be given larger images.
- Students with psychomotor skills disabilities will get assistance of the teacher and I will be given extra time to complete the assignment.
Differentiation of Instruction
Tier 1: Students will write a descriptive paragraph of the picture of a room of a house. Students will write the paragraph using the targeted vocabulary with 100% accuracy.
Students will be given a word box of the targeted vocabulary.
Tier 2: Students will write a descriptive paragraph of the picture of a room of a house. Students will write the paragraph using the targeted vocabulary with 100% accuracy.
Tier 3: Students will write a descriptive paragraph of the picture of a room of a house. Students will write the paragraph using the targeted vocabulary with 100% accuracy.
In addition, students must use at least five prepositions to describe the room and the location of the furniture.
Developmental Procedure
- Students will be introduced to the lesson with I talks. They will be asked questions such as: Vives en una casa o en un apartamento? (Do you live in a house on in an apartment?), Cuántos cuartos tiene tu casa? (How many rooms are in your house?).
- Using the Smart board, students will be introduced to each room of a house. As they are being taught the different names of the rooms, they will also be taught the names of the furniture in that particular room. Teacher will do comprehension checks in each room until she/he feels they understand the vocabulary before moving on to another room. (¿Es una cama o una cómoda? (Is this a bed or a dresser?), ¿De qué color es la cama? (What is the color of the bed?)).
- After going through each room and doing comprehension checks on the entire house, the teacher will show a picture of an empty house. Students will be asked to come to the board to put furniture in the various rooms. Students who come to the board will ask their classmates for feed back on the names of the rooms. Prior to labeling it. They will ask questions such as: “Esta es la sala o el comedor?” (Is this the living room or the dining room?), “Esta es la cocina o el bano?”(Is this the kitchen or the bathroom?).
Assessment
Students will write a descriptive paragraph of the picture of a room of a house. Students will write the paragraph using the targeted vocabulary with 100% accuracy.
Independent Practice
Following a lesson on the rooms of a house, students will have to use pictures from magazines to build their dream’s home.
Direct Teacher Intervention
Students will be asked to come to the smart board to put furniture in the various rooms. Teacher will ask the students to repeat the names of the furniture and the rooms as they go on.
Academic Enrichment
Students will be given a worksheet in which they will have to match the furniture to the room of the house it belongs to.
